The term ‘American folklore’ encompasses the stories, myths, tall tales, music, proverbs, fairy tales, demons, giants and legends that arrived on the shores of North America with the first Europeans in the 16th century. The characters and events that occur in American folklore emerged in a non-scientific New World as explanations for all the new natural phenomena the settlers observed, that affected their prolonged survival. Therefor within American folklore one finds evidence of the relationship between humans, nature and the perceived spirit world.

Superstitious Pioneers

The first American pioneers, who crossed the swampy South to settle in the West, showed steely determination as they hunted and gathered in the forests, fished the seas and rivers, fought off bears, mountain lions and wolves and lived in a state of constant insecurity about tomorrow. With no podcasts, Netlfix and YouTube, families spent evenings telling campfire tales, and it was from these flickering orange early-American scenes that the heroes of American frontier folklore emerged.

Tall tales about the ‘American Old West Frontier’ were often seasoned with many unbelievable elements that were recounted sincerely as being true, and American folklore, like most, is structured on exaggerations and fictionalisations of actual events. Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), the Swiss founder of analytical psychology, suggested the events and characters in world myths are archetypes arising from man’s shared collective unconscious and his research in the fields of mythology solved many problems in psychiatry, anthropology, literature, archaeology, philosophy and theological studies in the early 20th century. Furthering Jung´s research into the archetypes of mythology American mythologist Joseph Campbell, in his 1949 book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces , described the Hero´s Journey as any story where: “ a hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man

River Monsters follows the worldwide adventures of Suffolk-born British [1] host, biologist, adventurer and extreme angler Jeremy Wade. He explores rivers and lakes to uncover the creatures behind local folklore and harrowing tales of monster fish. The show has taken viewers to Cambodia, Canada, Germany, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Norway, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, India, Japan, Russia, Suriname, Brazil, Guyana, Mexico, Peru, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, the Republic of the Congo, Mongolia, and the U.S. states of Alaska, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, Washington, and Vermont.

In the first season, Wade's weekly quest had him in search of piranha, goonch catfish (during his investigation of the Kali River goonch attacks), alligator gar, wels catfish, arapaima, piraíba, and the bull shark. All of them are potentially deadly creatures poorly understood by humans. The show also focuses on explaining the creatures' feeding habits, behaviour and conservation status. Rebroadcasts of the episodes with captions showing behind the scenes commentary from the host about the particular episode can also be seen on both Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. These episodes are going by the title River Monsters: Unhooked.

The second season of River Monsters began airing on 24 April 2010, although the first episode, titled "Demon Fish" first appeared on Discovery Channel on 28 March 2010. This season consisted of 7 episodes and took viewers to the River Congo and other distant locations. In the episode, "Death Ray", Wade caught a pregnant giant freshwater stingray, the largest fish he ever landed. She later gave birth to two pups while being examined by Wade and a team of biologists. This season featured the white sturgeon, Wade's second largest catch.

The ninth season of River Monsters was announced as the final season.

Season Three (2011) Edit

  • "Piranha" – Jeremy tosses a dead duck in the water and witnesses the ferocity of the flesh-eating piranha. The fish only left the skin, the bones and some feathers. Jeremy must face the truth of what might have happened to a child who fell into the water not so long ago.
  • "Freshwater Shark" – Jeremy hooks into a gigantic marine fish in freshwater: a Queensland grouper. Jeremy then proves that sharks aren't just sea monsters and he even catches a small bull shark. This is the first ever proof that shark aren't just swimming around in the Australian rivers, they even breed in them.
  • "Killer Snakehead" – Jeremy dives into a school of snakehead young to find their murderous parents. Using a traditional technique of fishing with an arrow, he can take his hands on a huge female giant snakehead and he can even release it without permanent injuries.
  • "Demon Fish" – Jeremy faces his ultimate river monster: the Goliath tigerfish. After losing some tigerfish he hooked, he finally catches a real river monster, only to realise that it's too weak to be released. The fish soon dies and Jeremy gives its body to a close-by village to feed the people.

In Argentina's Paraná River, a young girl was killed by a river stingray. Venturing to a country he's never been to before, to face a fish he's never heard of before, Jeremy travels to this river to find the killer: the shorttail river stingray, which grows to 6 feet across. Unlike Thailand's giant freshwater stingray, this fish isn't long or wide. Instead it is thick and heavy, with a short, clublike tail with which it delivers its venomous sting. After hearing many more reports of attacks, Jeremy becomes determined to face this beast, which can glue itself to the river bottom like a suction cup. Its strength is then proven as Wade hooks into this tank-like fish in what is his longest battle to date.

  • "Amazon Flesh Eaters" – Jeremy Wade comes face to face with a family of fishes that include some real monsters: the family of catfishes. One of them is even capable of swallowing a man whole, says reports. Jeremy finds a gruesome scene of how aggressive Amazon fish can be. He meets the fish that devours you from the inside-out. Jeremy then uncovers a shocking tale of a fish entering the body of a man in the most horrifying of places. Finally he meets a very unusual catfish and catches the 'mother of all catfishes'.
  • "Alligator Gar" – Jeremy encounters a monster fish with a deadly set of teeth in the Deep South. One of these giants even draw blood on his hand. But he soon realises that these animals need our protection now more than ever to prevent their extinction.
  • "Killer Snakehead" – When Jeremy travelled to North America in search of the highly invasive bullseye snakehead, he also discovered a strange behaviour of introduced species. Silver carps jump out of the water in huge numbers when threatened by motor boats and they can sometimes easily knock out people too, only to be dragged underwater by the hooks tangled to their arms.
  • "Congo Killers" – Jeremy meets some villagers with a very bizarre fish that can breathe air and can grasp into dry land. In one of his most dangerous expedition in his life, he finds out that not the fish, but the interplay of the weather and the unusual fishing technique the locals use are the culprits of some strange disappearances.

Season Four (2012) Edit

Next, Wade returns to Texas' Trinity River, for a rematch with the alligator gar. In season 1, he had caught a 7-foot female gar and concluded that the fish had no interest in attacking people. Now, reports have surfaced that gar in Texas are once again reaching lengths of up to 14 feet, the perfect size for a potential killer. Having already experienced their impenetrable armour and razor sharp teeth, Jeremy follows reports of giant gar all over the Trinity, only to find possible evidence of giant gar in a very unexpected place.

After hearing reports of fishermen disappearing in the Zambezi River in Zambia, Jeremy Wade journeys there to uncover the truth behind their deaths. He hears tales of a man getting pulled in and drowning in the rapids after hooking into a monster fish. The natives believe it to be the work of a large, serpentine fish the size of a man. They also tell Wade of a snakelike river spirit called Nyaminyami, who is angry at the Kariba Dam for blocking its river. Believing Nyaminyami to be inspired from the killer fish, he travels to Lake Kariba to find the beast. After nearly being capsized in a storm, Jeremy hears reports of small toddlers and children being eaten by the fish, known locally as "Mazunda," as well as a fisherman being dragged to the depths beneath the dam. Interviewing a witness of the "Mazunda," Wade learns of the vundu catfish, southern Africa's largest fish. Travelling all over the Zambezi, Jeremy gains access to the prohibited waters directly beneath the dam, where he finally hooks into a monster.

Jeremy Wade's journey into extreme fishing started in India, where he caught large mahseer, and where he later caught a massive goonch that had been killing bathers. Now, he returns following reports of a new predator, capable of taking pets and small children. Looking around, he uncovers its identity: the sareng catfish, a streamlined predator with long jaws and sharp teeth. He also finds a problem: the sareng is sacred in India's Hindu religion and harming it is believed to curse you with bad luck. Almost immediately he encounters problems when the lake where he is fishing is closed and tries his luck in the wilderness of Corbett National Park, sharing the territory with man-eating tigers and wild elephants. The monsoon comes early and the fish are not biting, forcing him to leave the river. To escape what appears to be the wrath of the gods, he travels to Thailand to a lake inhabited by sareng, as well as countless other introduced river monsters. Despite not being a Hindu country, Thailand offers no protection from the gods as Jeremy seemingly catches every fish, especially red-tailed catfish, in the lake but the sareng. Deciding to face his demons instead of running from them, he returns to India to take part in a Hindu blessing, to appease the gods and convince them he means the fish no harm. Returning to the river, Jeremy finds he might have finally met his match.

  • The sareng was caught in the Lost Reels episode "Himalayan Giants", but was not mentioned here.

  • The sareng was briefly seen in the episode "Mekong Mutilator" with several specimens on a rack in the fish market. Jeremy does not mention it by name, he just takes of look at the fish and then says to the camera that when he asked about the name of the fish the woman selling it just told him the price.

Stingy Jack (also known as Jack the smith, Flakey Jack, Drunken Jack, Jack of the Lantern and by many other names) was a blacksmith and trickster. Jack was drunk a liar and a theft with skills that could rival the devil himself.

With no choice the devil made a deal with Jack not to take his soul so then Jack ket tge devil go.

When Jack's time came again the devil returned to try to take his soul one last time. Jack agreed to go with the devil only if he would pick a apple from a tree for him without using his powers. The devil agreed and once again Jack trucked him with his silver tongue Jack quickly put some crosses around the tree the devil was in. He left him up there until he agreed to never take his soul Jack let the devil go. Jack continued his evil wats until he died he went to the gates of heaven but wasn't allowed in so he tried entering hell but was denied to enter there as well. Jack begged to be let into the heaven or hell but his crimes prevented him from going to heaven and the devil kept his word that he wouldn't take Jack's soul.

Jack was forced to wonder in between heaven, hell and earth with no rest. Before he left the gates of hell the devil who took pity on Jack but also mocking at his fate tossed Jack burkng coal to help light his way. The devil laughed at Jack's misery but also felt bad that he had to honour his word to Jack.

In hid life Jack was cunning, sneaking, crafting, a silver tongue and deceitful. He was cheater and a sinner who enjoyed causing mischief he was thef. Jack could fool and trick others but almost no one could trick or fool Jack. He is a man who falled is own rules and decided his own fate no one told Jack what to do. Jack wasn't just good with words he was quick with his words as well and was quick with his words. Jack didn't hsve much skills to help him so he used his brain and words. Jack was a man who always had a plan and something up his shelve. He was akso the mean and a cold man compared next to the devil.

While Jack through he could when against the devil even though he outsmarted him the devil still when he cursed Jack to wonder forever in between worlds. This was the devil's pay back to Jack for tricking msny times. Jack never showed no fear or worry for his soul when the devil came to take it not until he learned that he would never be allowed to rest in the afterlife of heaven or hell. In his life he was a swindler who made a lot of wealth which did him no good when he died but only did him some good when he was alive.

In his life he was cruel man who stole and started fights. But after his body died he became a soul that was forced to live to live forever with his crumes and sins. When he was alive Jack felt no shame or guilt for what he had done not until he died and was cursed. Jack's curse is not only punishment for him but a warning for others who have sinned like Jack. He tries keep others from making the same mistakes that he has made but will also prey on those who have sinned and don't listen to warnings.

Jack's turnip and coal given to him by the devil is what started the idea of Jack-o-lanterns to keep evil spirits away. However those have sin in their hearts the Jack-o-lantern becomes a beacon for Jack.

This is right out of our time period, but I&rsquom sure enterprising souls can find a way to make use of it. I&rsquom a huge fan of the Aubrey/Maturin series of novels by Patrick O&rsquoBrian, following the careers of an English Navy Captain and his particular friend, a surgeon, naturalist, and intelligence officer. If nothing else, the books are examples of great characterization which is always inspirational for better role-playing. The Patrick O&rsquoBrian Compendium is a worthy online resource.

Mega Miniatures has done the metal buying public a great service by embarking upon a campaign to catalogue 25mm miniature from a variety of manufacturers — Mini Mag Volume One ($1.99) — making it easier for one to decide where to spend one&rsquos gaming money. Of particular interest to TI gamers are the great minis from Pulp Figures and the Call of Cthulhu and Space: 1889 figures from RAFM.

November 27, 2007 — Young Indiana Jones

Young Indiana Jones was a television show (&lsquo92-&lsquo96) chronicling the adventurous youth of our favorite neopulp hero. The first volume — The Early Years — went on sale in October The second volume — The War Years — comes out on December 18.

November 19 – 25, 2007 — The Virtual Armchair General & an Hiatus

This is a commercial Dispatch, perhaps in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season, but Patrick Wilson&rsquos Virtual Armchair General is one wonderful source of wargaming resources, from pulp rules (Astounding Tales!) to cardstock buildings and ships to Thrilling Combat miniatures (for fighting the Gangs of New York).

November 18, 2007 — The Dangerous Book for Boys

This one has been out for awhile, but if you&rsquove not had a look, I recommend taking an afternoon to peruse The Dangerous Book for Boys. It&rsquos a compendium of all the sort of adventurous knowledge that the authors (and this author) fear that is being lost with the ascension of television watching and video game zombidom. There&rsquos illustrated accounts of pivotal historical battles, instructions for building a (non-powered) go-cart, and even role playing (in the form of Dungeons & Dragons) gets a mention.

There seems to be a new companion book for girls which is not at all the same thing, concerning passing notes and tea parties — but, wait! I suppose that the bread and butter of NAGS Society Members is transporting secret messages and they certainly need to learn the intricate etiquette for taking high tea, so I guess we can recommend The Daring Book for Girls after all!

November 17, 2007 — It&rsquos in the Stars

One possible basis for a role-playing campaign is that various pseudo-sciences — astrology being a great example — are in fact true. The GM could read up and work out the logic by which the advances of modern science are, in fact, completely under the control of the motions of the stars and planets. The existence of the æther is a Victorian science fiction staple, while the four elements and humours are worth consideration.

November 16, 2007 — Thoroughbred Miniatures

Most folks who employ miniature figurines while gaming understandably favor the popular 25-28mm size, with its kaleidoscopic variety. If, out of perversity, you have sallied forth in another scale, it can become a &ldquogame&rdquo in itself to find or convert suitable figures. All of this is a preamble to say that I discovered some fabulous 10mm civilians from Thoroughbred Miniatures who are perfect for most stops on the the Terra Incognita timeline.

MagWeb is a treasure trove of digitalized versions of numerous military historical and gaming related magazines, available for a modest subscription. There are sample articles you can download to have a look.

November 3, 2007 — A Steampunk&lsquos Guide to the Apocalypse

Steampunk Magazine brings us A Steampunk&lsquos Guide to the Apocalypse. In this 31 page pdf, Margaret Killjoy assembles a quantity of useful knowledge for surviving the apocalypse, including how to make a trapped birdhouse (to acquire food), solar cooking, water filtration, &c., &c. It&rsquos not entirely &ldquosteampunk,&rdquo strictly speaking, as there are references to plastic bottles and houses made of automobile tires still, a great read.

October 16, 2007 — En Garde!

A discussion regarding a Deadwood-style Western campaign on the Two Hour Wargames Yahoo Group dredged up this old chestnut — En Garde! — which, I would imagine, was the original swashbuckling RPG. It was interesting in that players competed for social standing rather than gold pieces and that they filled out a social card at the beginning of the day and then set out to accomplish it (rather like recording orders in an old wargame, I suppose). Well, it warms the heart to see that En Garde! is still in print. I&rsquove always thought that a Victorian version would be fascinating.

Colonial Gothic, the &ldquosupernatural historical horror roleplaying game set during the dawn of the American Revolution,&rdquo is available as a pdf from RPG Now ($9.99 for 220 pages).

If you want to backdate the story even further, Witchhunter: The Invisible World would seem to be a Solomon Kane inspired game from the same company ($19.99 for 256 pages).

Devoted to the uneventful History of the fictitious Presipality of Monte-Cristo by the mid-18th century, and to boring logorrhean expectorations about fictitious wargame armies and their uniforms by the Lace Wars times. All texts herein are clumsy translations from Franco-Phocean gibbersish to pidgin English.

Of course, it predates the TI timeline by a century, but there are some wonderful images of early &ldquosci-fi&rdquo technology that could have been stolen from the NAGS Society drawing boards. I suppose when you think about it, a society with such a silly name would perhaps be most at home with Munchausen and Tristram Shandy.

September 11, 2007 — The Real Siberia

The intrepid Dirk Collins has ventured into terra incognita and once again returned with a valuable bit of information:

Every once-in-awhile I come across a historical story that surprises me with the sheer volume of information, details, facts, and observations. Such is the story of John Foster Fraser, English Journalist, about his journey in 1901 from Moscow to Vladivostok on the newly constructed Trans-Siberian railroad. A vivid picture of Tsarist Russia in the late Victorian age, a preview of things to come, and a good resource for TI in the far east just prior to the 1905 war between Japan and Russia.

By this account, easy to see why the Russians rebelled and brought down the Czar just 16 years later.

The expert modeler at Shifting Lands has fashioned some houses which should serve as inspiration (and I believe they are for sale). While intended for fantasy/pirate games, I think they have a whimsical Victorian colonial feel that make them appealing. I love the resin ships as well for their cartoony feel — just like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyworld.

Here&rsquos a detailed review of the Victorian era roleplaying game Passages from Blue Devil Games. I haven&rsquot tried this one yet, but it looks to have many of the qualities I admire in Victorian gaming, especially a sense of humor. There is a new free adventure, The Spooring of the Jabberwock (direct pdf download), based on Alice&rsquos adventures in Wonderland.

A couple of interesting items came out whilst I was absent from the ætherwaves:

He&rsquos written on Joseph-Marie Jacquard, who&rsquos punch card technology for looms is considered the forerunner of computer storage devices, and he&rsquos apparently at work on a novel concerning a Victorian computer revolution.

The Virtual Armchair General is now accepting subscriptions ($15 US, $20 after the subscription period closes on July 15) for a collection of pulp gaming scenarios entitled Astounding Adventures! (Read the announcement on the Miniature Page.) They&rsquore written for Howard Whitehouse&rsquos Astounding Tales!, and include conversion information for all the major pulp skirmish games: .45 Adventure, Rugged Adventures, and To Be Continued. By Gaslight.

Despite my attempts to get back on track with daily Dispatching, the NAGS Society will have an expected hiatus from June 29 to July 8. If it&rsquos any consolation, all of the Dispatches from 2007 have been categorized. Upon my return, I&rsquoll endeavor to prune out the dead links and work on parsing the remaining 2006 Dispatches into their proper locations on the Links pages. North American Fortifications: 1526 - 1956 is a &ldquoCatalogue and Gazetteer of Forts and Fortresses, Frontier Posts, Camps, Stockades, Blockhouses, Garrisons, Arsenals, and Seacoast Batteries in the United States and Canada,&rdquo for example. The American Forts Network is another helpful resource.

June 26, 2007 — Steampunk Magazine #2

The second number of the free online Steampunk Magazine is available. The theme is &ldquoMisapplied Technology&rdquo and the magazine contains articles on Steampunk fashion (if you&rsquod like to dress like your character all the time), how-tos for making an apron and a pennyfarthing bicycle (by cutting and rewelding a standard bicycle — wow!), and a wonderful piece on the history of Steampunk. This one is well worth your time.

Rather than the Thunderbird being a phoenix variant, I'd recommend poking at its myths some more. They're not just 'large bird', they're protectors. In addition, I can't find the source on it, but at least one area had myths of thunderbirds specifically shedding their skin to live among humans. Said people oculd then later don those skins and go back to their previous forms in times when their true power would be required.

They would really, really hate Yuan-Ti though. Constant in the Thunderbird myths is the hatred of snakes and beings from the underworld

Why colonial period? (First of all colonization, blech).

Why not in the period prior to the arrival of Europeans to the shores of North America? Therefore analogous from a timeline standpoint to the pseudo medieval period that D&D sort of sits in.

But at the same time, make it so that some of the glorious megafauna of the Pleistocene still live here in the Americas - Mastodon/Mammoths, Sabre Tooth Tigers, and so many more. You can also do something sort of cool with having sentient Crocodlians in the SE of what would become the US - and mostly use Lizardmen stats.

Also like the ideas of Dwarves and Elves and Halflings here living with the humans - but perhaps not in harmony. It could be when the humans came across the land bridge from Asia, the D, E & H peoples who had staked out the Mountains, Forests, and Plains (respectively) of North America WERE NOT HAPPY. And while Humans have brokered peace here and there, there are also frequent skirmishes.

Lord of the Hidden Layer

A group of physically-tough peoples (dwarf, goliath, half-orc?) live near the Comstock Lode area. They revere the ground to the point that they will not use stone tools (but anything from an animal body is OK). They can summon earth elementals to aid in their defense. If you get to the home village the leaders summon a Silver Elemental.
Because silver, they have mutual non-interference treaties with were-tribes around them. These guys are the only people who can make the were-tribes say Ouch in a fight.

Cold Elemental spirits live in Donner Pass. People nearby know how to placate them, but people from farther afield do not - and may not even believe they exist. See the scene in LotR where the Fellowship tries to climb the mountain and gets blizzarded, before deciding to enter Moria.
If spirits do not suit, pick an otherwise-obscure prehistoric megafauna that liked mountainous terrains.

Fearsome critters - Wikipedia

Fearsome Critters are pretty good to build up your monster manual! Maybe the Skunk-Ape of Florida? The Jersey Devil? In addition to Coyote the trickster, you also have Raven!

Also: LAKE MONSTERS! From Champ to Ogopogo, there is tons of lake monsters in North America! Because there is SO many lakes.

That being said, one place without one is Lake Superior. I remember a line: "There is no monster in the lake. The LAKE is the monster." I could see Druids who worship the lake, and maybe Fathom Warlock making a path with. something. residing within its depth!

There's also the concept of the Hudson Bay Company as a sort of antagonist force. A commercial entreprise who mercilessly claims control over a large piece of land. They can be a source of quests, but also an enemy force.

And while South America had El Dorado, North-America had the Kingdom of Saguenay and the Settlement of Norumbega. Of course, just like El Dorado, both of these were basically dreamed up by coloniser looking for a jackpot. It's been suggested the Saguenay legend was thought up as a prank by the Iroquois
